A significant component of Dr. Montessori's philosophy was the development and support of the social-emotional life of the child. Grace and courtesy, care of self, care of others, and the environment is a one of the biggest underpinnings in the Montessori environment. Teachers role model compassion, respect, and understanding and children develop such qualities too. The Peace Curriculum, which is is woven into every aspect of the Montessori environment is another way for children to learn kindness, compassion, understanding and conflict resolution.

What is the Montessori Method? THE MONTESSORI METHOD WAS DEVELOPED BY ONE OF ITALY’S FIRST FEMALE DOCTORS; DR. MARIA MONTESSORI. SHE WAS A SCIENTIST, AN INVENTOR AND AN EDUCATOR WHO SPENT HOURS OBSERVING THE CHILDREN IN THE GHETTOS OF ROME. MATERIALS ARE LAID OUT ON TRAYS THAT IN ENGLISH ARE READ FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. MATERIALS BECOME MORE COMPLEX AS THE YEAR PROGRESSES. ORDER, CONCENTRATION, COORDINATION, AND INDEPENDENCE ARE DEVELOPED AS CHILDREN WORK WITH THESE MATERIALS. CHILDREN LEARN TO USE TINY IMPLEMENTS, SUCH AS SPOONS, TWEEZERS, PITCHERS AND KNIVES ALL OF WHICH STRENGTHEN THE MUSCLES IN THE HAND AND ARM THUS AIDING WRITING DEVELOPMENT. CHILDREN LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES, HOW TO DRESS THEMSELVES, POUR THEIR OWN BEVERAGES, AND PREPARE THEIR OWN FOOD. MATH CHILDREN EXPERIENCE A SOLID FOUNDATION OF ONE THROUGH TEN USING MATERIALS THAT ARE CHILD SIZED AND ATTRACTIVE. THEY WORK WITH MATERIALS THAT TEACH THEM THE CONCEPT OF NUMERALS AND QUANTITY.
